Have everything your puppy might need before you bring them home.

Bringing home a new puppy is an exciting milestone for every family. Preparation is key to helping a young puppy settle in comfortably and confidently.

Everyday Essentials

Food and Water Bowls - Choose sturdy, easy-to-clean bowls made of stainless steel or ceramic. Avoid plastic if possible, since it can harbor bacteria or get chewed up quickly. A non-slip base helps prevent spills from an overexcited eater.

Puppy Food - Your breeder or shelter should tell you what your puppy has been eating. Stick with that brand for at least a week before slowly transitioning to a new food if needed. Puppies need a diet made specifically for their growth stage, so look for “puppy formula” on the bag.

Golden Doodlebugs puppies are started on a high-quality, well-balanced puppy formula. Families will receive details about the specific brand and feeding routine.

Collar and ID Tag - A soft, adjustable collar is ideal for a growing puppy. Every puppy should wear an ID tag engraved with the owner’s contact information. Even though all Golden Doodlebugs puppies are microchipped before leaving, visible identification provides an additional layer of safety.

Leash and Harness - A lightweight leash and properly fitted harness are recommended for early leash training. A harness helps protect the puppy’s neck and supports good walking habits.

Crate - Crate training provides structure and helps puppies develop positive routines. Choose a crate that allows the puppy to stand, turn, and lie down comfortably. Adjustable crates with dividers are ideal since they grow with the puppy.

Bed and Blanket - Provide a soft, washable bed for rest periods. Each Golden Doodlebugs puppy goes home with a blanket or toy that carries familiar scents from the litter to help them feel secure during the first few nights.

Grooming and Health Supplies

Puppy Shampoo and Brush - Select a gentle, tear-free shampoo made specifically for puppies. Regular brushing not only keeps the coat in top condition but also helps the puppy become comfortable with handling. It is very important to brush goldendoodles regularly to prevent matting, a painful condition where the dog's hair grows into a clump.

Nail Clippers - Introduce gentle paw handling early to make nail maintenance stress-free. Keeping nails trimmed helps prevent discomfort and injury, but be careful not to cut the quick. Watch a few educational videos on trimming dogs' nails or ask your local vet or groomer for pointers.

Toothbrush and Toothpaste - Dental care should begin during puppyhood. Use a soft-bristled brush and dog-safe toothpaste to establish a lifelong habit of oral hygiene.

Training Tools

Training Treats - Soft, bite-sized treats are essential for positive reinforcement. Use them for crate training, recall, and reinforcing good manners.

Clicker (Optional) - Clicker training can be a helpful method for clear communication during training sessions. Consistency is key—use the same cues that the puppy has already been introduced to at Golden Doodlebugs.

Cleaning Supplies - Accidents are part of the early learning process. Keep enzymatic cleaners on hand to remove odors and prevent repeat marking.

Toys and Enrichment

Chew Toys - Chewing helps with teething and provides mental stimulation. Offer a variety of safe, durable chew toys such as rubber or nylon options to redirect chewing from furniture or shoes.

Puzzle Toys and Enrichment Games - Interactive feeders and puzzle toys encourage problem-solving and help prevent boredom during quiet times.

Comfort Toys - Soft plush toys can provide comfort and companionship, especially during the first few nights away from littermates. Always supervise when your puppy has a soft toy to prevent them tearing it up and swallowing it.

What to Bring on Pick-Up Day

Pick-up day is a big moment for both the puppy and the family. Bringing the right items will make the trip home more comfortable and stress-free.

Recommended Items to Bring:

  • Towel or blanket for lining the car seat or crate

  • Crate or carrier to keep the puppy secure during travel

  • Leash and collar for bathroom breaks during the trip

  • Paper towels, wipes, and small trash bags for cleanup

  • Water and a travel bowl, especially for longer drives

  • A few small treats for reassurance and calmness

Whenever possible, it is best to have two people present—one to drive and one to comfort and monitor the puppy during travel.

With the right preparation, families can ensure a seamless transition from our home to theirs. Having these essentials ready will help new owners focus on bonding and building positive routines from the very first day.

Golden Doodlebugs remains a resource for families long after pick-up day. Questions are always welcome, and continued communication helps ensure that each puppy grows into the healthy, well-adjusted dog they are meant to be!
